A Safe Haven: How CASA First’s Abrigo Advocates Are Changing Lives
Sam, Jeremy, and Angel, siblings aged 6 to 12 from Northern New Mexico, began their journey with CASA First as bright and enthusiastic Youth Ambassadors. While volunteering, it became clear that their story was more complex—one of resilience in the face of adversity. These siblings had experienced the child welfare system and were now being raised by their great-grandparents, who had stepped in as their guardians during a difficult time. The family faced many challenges, from financial struggles to emotional adjustments, and they often felt overwhelmed and alone.
When CASA First launched its Abrigo Advocate program, designed to provide advocacy and support for youth outside the foster care system, Sam, Jeremy, and Angel were among the first to enroll. For their great-grandparents, this new program was a lifeline. The family shared their needs, ranging from practical support like braces to emotional resources for navigating the challenges of kinship guardianship.
Through Abrigo, CASA First stepped in to provide both practical and emotional assistance. The children received the braces they needed, and the family accessed Crime Victims Reparation Commission funds to help with financial burdens. But the impact didn’t stop there—Sam, Jeremy, and Angel also began to build emotional resilience and stronger family bonds through one-on-one mentorship and group activities.
One of the most transformative experiences for the family was CASA First’s Positive Psychology Workshop, led by the organization’s Volunteer Supervisor. During these sessions, the siblings and their great-grandparents learned strategies to manage emotions, communicate effectively, and deepen their connection as a family. Laughter, teamwork, and encouragement filled the room as the family found new ways to thrive together.
The advocacy provided by CASA First gave this family more than just resources—it gave them hope and the reassurance that they were not alone. Today, Sam, Jeremy, and Angel are thriving, their great-grandparents are more confident in their roles, and the family has newfound strength to face the future.
For CASA First, the Abrigo Advocate program is more than a service—it’s a commitment to ensuring that families like Sam, Jeremy, and Angel’s have the tools, support, and encouragement they need to create a brighter tomorrow. Together, we are proving that with the right resources and a caring community, no family has to navigate life’s challenges alone.
