A Place to Belong: How Family Strengths Network Brings Families Together
When Safiyyah first moved to Los Alamos, she wasn’t sure where to turn. The small-town atmosphere was new to her, and without family or friends nearby, the days felt isolating—especially as a parent of a curious toddler. She longed for a safe, welcoming space where her little one could play freely and she could connect with other parents. Then she found Family Strengths Network’s (FSN) Family Resource Center (FRC)—and everything changed.
For families like Safiyyah’s, The FRC is more than just a play space—it’s an anchor for families seeking connection and support. The center provides a warm and inviting environment where parents, caregivers, and children can build relationships and find support. Whether escaping the winter chill for indoor play, attending parenting classes, or simply sharing stories with others who understand the joys and challenges of raising children, families at the FRC discover a sense of belonging.
“Because of all the wonderful people here,” Safiyyah says when asked why she keeps coming back. She appreciates that the space is safe and baby-proofed, giving her peace of mind as her little one explores freely.

But FSN offers more than just a place to gather. Thanks to funding from United Way Northern New Mexico (UWNNM) and other partners, the FRC provides free programs and resources that ease financial strain and strengthen community bonds. From Toddler Craft and Family Yoga to beloved annual events like Lucky Ducky Day and Gingerbread House Building, FSN makes it possible for families to have fun, learn, and grow together. The biannual Clothing Swap helps families stretch their budgets by allowing them to exchange clothes, household items, and toys—at no cost.
Beyond play and activities, FSN helps families find their footing in Los Alamos. The FRC serves as a hub for support groups, parenting classes, and resource connections, ensuring that every parent or caregiver—whether new to town or a longtime resident—feels supported. Through United Way’s Collective Impact program, UNITE!, FSN also gains access to board and staff training and networking opportunities with other nonprofits, further strengthening their ability to serve the community.
For Safiyyah and so many others, it’s not just a resource center. It's a foundation for building community and lasting connections.
